8 Things Not to Do When Content Marketing

Content marketing works.

But it is a delicate form of online marketing.

It needs to be strategized, planned, carefully executed and analyzed at every step to make sure that everything goes properly.

It can be really helpful for your business and your brand’s image but can totally backfire and ruin everything if done wrongly.

Let us take a look at the top eight things that should be avoided while content marketing.

1) Cheap Content

This is the most important thing that you should take care of while doing content marketing.

There are no such things as free or cheap content – it is just another word for garbage. Dump the cheap idea and start working for quality.

Most cheap content are spun, copied and roughly re-written crap that never works.

Content marketing requires very high quality articles that are freely shared over the social media. If must be so good that others not only gain value out of it but they also share it in their networks and communities.

2) Not sharing on the social media

To make your content marketing campaigns successful, you need to spread your content well.

Social media is the first place you should look for, while planning to spread your content. Share it on your own profiles; promote it on niche social networking and bookmarking sites. Start Looking for social communities and groups that might be interested in your content.

Once you are done with the free promotions, add some paid social boost by buying facebook, twitter, linkedin, pinterest, stumbleupon etc. ads to get more traffic to your content.

3) Making it difficult to share

Is your content difficult to share? Perhaps you have forgotten to add social button on your blog, or worse your social buttons are giving errors or asking to login to the social sites before they can post the shares.

The best way to make sure that the social buttons work is to try them yourself from time to time.

Make sharing even easier with some excellent social plugins like “click to tweet” etc.

4) Making it difficult to engage

We all are guilty of this sometimes. We all want engagement on our blogs, we are sometimes just too worried about spam that we start killing our genuine engagements.

Here are 4 simple ways to keep the engagement going:

Make commenting easy – Don’t force users to register. That is an easy way to kill any engagement at all.

Also, rather than having a commenting software, keeping the original commenting system of the CMS, wordpress for example, is the best choice. If you want an additional commenting system, opt for facebook or Google+ comments alongside the default option.

Always reply to comments – keep motivating your commentators by replying to comments. Make sure to reply to every comment that is posted.

Check for spam – Have a plugin like akismet etc. to keep spam away. If spam comments leak in your blog, it will start to have an effect on the genuine comments.

Do approve comments as quickly as possible – generally, real time approval of comments is the best way to keep the engagement going. If your approvals to the comments take time – that is surely a bad sign. Having comments is one thing and having a conversation going is quite the other. Try to approve and reply to comments as quickly as possible.

5) Charging for content from your audience

Seriously, who does that?

Unfortunately a lot of people do it. They will put their content behind some kind of a wall and expect people to do social shares or make payment before the content is displayed. This kind of approach is very much active on forums. This is a real bad idea, especially for content marketing – as the whole point of creating content here is to give them away freely.

6) Putting copyright issues

Yes, you need to have a copyright statement about your content. You don’t want people to steal your content. But people should consume and share your content and your copyright terms should not come in the way.

7) Not promoting it enough

Content marketing requires heavy promotions. It takes quite a lot of time and effort and even a budget to get a piece of content ready. All of it will come to no good if the content is not promoted enough. Do not leave any opportunity of promotions, free and paid – unused. Make sure to use every trick and method of promotion available to you so that your content reaches the widest possible audience.

8) Not having good social profiles of your own

Your own social profiles are the ideal launch pads for your content.

Content marketing starts best at home. You need some really active social profiles to give your content the initial boost by which it can attract a larger audience.

Start working on your social profiles as they are the starting points and can be used over and over again for every content marketing campaign that you launch.

One of the best plug-ins for WordPress to stop spam in its tracks is Captcha Bank. You have control over how many characters you want in the password code before a reader can comment. Before I used it I was inundated with spam.
