Content Marketing; A Strong Strategy For Driving Traffic, by Brian Newmark

Traffic.

This term has a different meaning based on the perspective. If sales are your primary goal, the action that your generated traffic takes should end up buying your stuff. If you want conversions, perhaps on an email list or on social media, you will have a different approach with your traffic.

You need a traffic strategy in place that brings targeted traffic based on your specific needs. This is where content marketing is best at. Here, in this article – we will discuss 6 content strategies to drive traffic.

1) Blog Posts

While content should be used for marketing as much as possible, one can’t ignore the value of content for your own domain. Make sure to have some really great content, which is otherwise referred to as “flagship content” and display it properly on your site and your blog as featured articles. This will build credibility and your followers and readers will become loyal to you.

When you use great content to market your business, once they do convert and land on your site, they expect equally good content on-site as well. If you fail to deliver this, your conversions will move away from you and you will lose them before you even get an opportunity to pitch them anything.

2) Social media

Social media is referred as micro blogging. Twitter has a limitation of 140 characters, which includes links, hashtags, @ mentions, some space for retweeters to add their bit, and then the famous phrase – “Please Retweet”. So, all in all, there is very little to really say. And yet, you need some really good messages to keep your followers active and engaged.

Other social platforms allow longer posts, like facebook, linkedin, G+ etc. However, people on social media are pretty quick to move on. So if you want their attention and their social favours – you have to make it quick.

Here are 3 ways by which you can make your social content more engaging:

* Use Images. Social media is always happy to consume images. If your small little update on twitter or facebook has an image added to it, it will gain plenty more likes, retweets, favourites and comments.

* Post quotes. People love quotes on the social media. Small and insightful quotes – especially if they are motivating, entertaining or even funny can help. Tip: add quotes in images – that works best.

* Share relevant links – Post links to good articles. If you have a niche based following, posting relevant and on-topic links can help a lot.

3) Guest Blogging

You already have a blog, right?

So, what is the whole point of not posting your content on your own blog and rather doing guest blogging with it?

You do need content on your blog. But that is the first step. Once you already have a decent number of articles on your blog, there is no point in adding more articles without building an audience base first. Keep a content schedule for your blog – like 1 to 2 posts a week and stick to it. With the rest of your content, do guest blogging.

You need an audience that will consume your content. You need people to read your content; just having it does not make any sense.

4) Infographics

Having all text content can make your blog very boring.

You can keep working on your titles, you can add good looking images, and you can even make the article well formatted for easy reading – but it will still remain text.

If you want some diversity, if you want to make your readers happy and excited about your new blog post – give them an infographic.

Yes, it is costly. It can be around $500 an infographic to start with. But it is still very much worth it.

5) Meme

This is for the social media. And it really, truly works!

If you want some real traffic coming from social media, from sites like Reddit etc. meme is what you should be making.

It is really easy – go find some creative commons image from flickr and add something funny on it. It will go viral on the social media bringing in plenty of traffic.

Do it as a niche specific message to gain more targeted traffic from it.

6) How-tos

Evergreen content has no alternative.

If you want traffic to just keep coming, and keep growing as you add new articles, how to guides is what you need.

How to guides are ever green content, they rank once and they mostly stay ranked on the search engines and keep sending plenty of traffic every day. If you add more of such type of content, your traffic will increase in time.

There are a number of ways to build content that drives traffic. One just need to keep doing it and consistently. Traffic is always built over time.

Great info Brian Newmark! I’ve been working on ways to get more traffic to my blog, so I’ll look into incorporating a few of these strategies. I agree that guest blogging helps out a lot with traffic and SEO as well.
