Five Reasons You Suck At Content Marketing, by Brian Newmark

Content marketing not working out for you?

You have strategized the whole thing, implemented it carefully and now you are waiting for results that are unlikely ever to come.

What went wrong?

You start blaming yourself and keep wondering if you really do suck at content marketing.
Here, in this article, we will discuss five reasons why your content marketing efforts are not delivering results.

1) Content:

This is the primary reason why a content marketing campaign fails.
If your content is no good, not related to your niche, solves nothing and is completely off topic and irrelevant, then you know why your content marketing had failed.

Do take enough time to strategize your content. Prepare a full content plan and schedule everything before starting it.
If you do this step properly, it will generate a better ROI and your campaign will never completely fall flat.

2) Branding:

Even the best of the content does not provide enough reach if it is low on branding.
People trust brands, they like reputation and following.

Whatever content you have come up with, whatever business you are in, if you brand it well, the ROI will be much higher.

3) Lack of Proper Launch Pads.

You need a strong platform of your own to launch a content marketing campaign.

Be it a blog, a strong email list or your social media profiles, unless you have a base to launch your content it won’t get much success.

A strong platform takes time to build, it requires discipline and consistency. If you are building a strong twitter profile, it will take years of hard work and consistency to make it popular and influential. You need to tweet at least five to eight times a day and make sure your tweets are worth re-tweeting. Do a few creative tweets a day, like adding something interesting into an image and posting it. Quotes are the best in this regard.

While it is hard to get the base setup, if you delay creating one, you are going to regret it in the future. You need your launch pads and the quicker you start working on it the better. Like they say, the best time to create a platform of yours was a few years ago. Since you missed it, the next best time is today.

4) Selling too

The number one problem with content marketing is that most marketers do not understand it. Content marketing is not about selling, at least not directly. You are using content to market your product or business, but not selling anything directly.

Content is easy to market. It spreads well; it is mostly received nicely by any audience. Compare it to preaching about your business and you will see how few are left with you.

Your content has to be unique, high quality, interesting, informational and related to your business. It has to be on a niche that is directly related to your business.

But it won’t have to be about your business. It has got to be informational, something of value which solves a purpose.
Even after a successful content marketing campaign, when it comes to follow-up, even then you have to be careful with the sales pitches and keep them to a bare minimum.

5) Resorting to spam.

There was a time in the past when spam used to work. In those days, the interface was boring, the content was re-written and stupid junk and the backlinks were obvious and spammy. All that used to work out nicely as the search engines themselves were stupid. Those days are gone now, for good.

At this moment, if you are resorting to spam techniques to execute your content marketing campaign, it will not work.
Re-written and spun content does not work any more. Search engines are just too good to detect those. And even if they don’t, there is no purpose of spam content. No one will be able to read those; you yourself can’t read it, that is how bad it sounds. You need your content to be attractive so that people share it and unless that happen you will lose it in the very first step.

If you use spam to promote your content on the social media, chances are, your social channels will get blocked by the various social media websites.
If you use spam to build your backlinks, your website will get penalized by the search engines.
In short, spam does not work anymore.

Content marketing is a specialized form of online marketing. It requires a professional content marketing strategy to begin with. You need to have a budget allocated for your entire campaign. The execution requires patience, discipline and consistency. You can’t rush into things; it’s a delicate process and needs to be handled properly.

Thanks, Brian Newmark. I am glad that there are reasons for not being on the best side of the search engines sometimes when it comes to content marketing. Also, those mailing lists really need to have targeted leads in them and not just people randomly signing up.

A great thanks to Brian Newmark for such a good article… Great piece, It’s an unfortunate (inevitable?) development that so many folks are now doing content for content’s sake — realizing that it seems to be an important part of today’s well rounded marketing efforts, and thinking of it as an end in itself, not a means of communication.

    I particularly like this above:
