Guest Blogging, it is a marketing tool to provide great content and get published in return. The process is fairly simple; you as a guest blogger research your niche and find a bunch of blogs that are related to your business.

Then, start learning more about those blogs like what kind of topics works best on them, what has been covered and what can do well that has not been covered yet. Once you are ready, make a pitch. Suggest them an article that can do well on their blog. Wait for their reply. Once they approve your idea send them the article and get published.

Sounds good?

But there is a negative side to it. Some people have already abused this system for years and finally it is on search engines radars now. If you do guest blogging for links that pass page rank, then be prepared to risk standing on the wrong side of Google. This brings us to the question of whether guest blogging is really good for content marketing or the days of guest blogging is already gone.

The answer is not that simple.

Guest blogging still works, provided that you do it correctly with proper caution. Here, in this article, we will discuss ten things that should be taken care of, while doing guest blogging.

Low quality content

Content marketing starts with a great piece of content. If you try guest blogging with the same mentality that people have for article marketing – you are already set to be doomed. Google is after such content, if you try guest blogging with spun or low quality re-written article, you will become a soft target for penalization.

Change your marketing strategy and add some budget to it. Get a great piece of content made up. It will cost you some money, think of it in terms of asset building for future. Do a guest post on a huge site with the best quality content that you can manage and enjoy great results.

Anchor texts:

Natural anchors are best; sometimes they can even be a bit promotional and optimized. But when you try to put 3 keywords on an anchor that points to a commercial website – it seems like you are asking for it.

It is best to leave the anchor texts to the editors. Just mention that use a related anchor text and leave it at that.

Let the editor make a decision and use an anchor text that the editor feels right.

Commercial Links:

As blog owners, you might ask yourself this question. Is giving out commercial links safe?

The safest thing to do is to nofollow them. However, even commercial sites need dofollow links to rank and since they are already ranking – it is clear that people are still linking to them with dofollow links. The trick here is the make them look natural. If you can do this, you can easily link to commercial sites with zero issues.

Unrelated Links or Content:

Unrelated links or content is a big no-no. There is seriously no reason to why you should have an unrelated content. Just get a piece of content written up which matches your blog and your link properly. If the link that you have in a guest post is unrelated to your blog, you should absolutely reject it as a blogger – and as a guest blogger, avoid unrelated blogs for guest posting.

Using a site that is banned:

This is tricky. You do know that certain networks like MyBlogGuest or PostJoint are banned and you should avoid those, but individual banned blogs are difficult to avoid. They might be under a Google penalty and yet show Pagerank.

They are difficult to judge. You need to check by a number of metrics like semrush, their Alexa, PR and DA. See if they are linking to any objectionable sites. Do your research before making a post on them.

Too much of a Good thing:

Guest blogging is good, and if you do it with a great piece of content and publish it on a site which is reasonably established, things will work out for good. However, the same approach with several hundred posts a week might still be a very bad idea.

There are people who do dozens of guest posts every day. That is not a very good strategy. Keep it limited, check for quality and keep doing it with a low profile without getting a lot of attention to yourself.

Footprint:

Search engines are great at detecting footprint. You are building links via guest posts and everything is working out nicely. So why leave footprint and get caught?

If you leave behind easily detectible patters, then the search engines will track you down easily. Being too specific is a bad idea. Think about it, are you asking for PR4+ and DA 50+ blogs for guest posts. So, once someone go through your backlink profile, and it show up as 200 links with the same DA and PR pointing to you, doesn’t that seem like a giant red flag?

The bottom line is to keep things simple. Do a mix of things, whether anchor text or target blogs. Don’t do anything in a certain pattern. Keep things random and natural.
