Where You Went Wrong With Content Marketing, How To Fix It

Content marketing is a specialized form of marketing.
It is easy to overlook certain crucial fine print and go wrong and mess it up badly.

When you do content marketing properly it bring a lot of benefits, so you can’t ignore it and you can’t go wrong. This is a tricky situation.

Let us discuss the various scenarios in content marketing where you went wrong and how you can fix it.

1) Content:

With so much cheap junk out there, one can easily get tempted to buy cheap articles and start using it for content marketing.

While this cheap content might seem like a good idea initially, in reality these are just spun and re-written garbage. Once you start to read them you will see how bad they really are.

If you went wrong on this step, the remedy might not be that easy. You need to start contacting the sites where you have published such junk and ask them to remove your link from it. Thus you can distance yourself from such content. If you have such articles on your sites then it is time to get it removed. The best way to do this is to hire a good writer and send him the titles of such content that is already published on your site. Let him write a fresh, high quality article as its replacement. This way, you don’t have to remove the article completely, just get the junk content out and add high quality content in its place.

2) Links:

Content marketing will generate links and some of those links won’t be of great quality. The best way is to have a full time team who specialize in getting low quality links out of the system. However, that said, there is no point in keep building low quality links. If your previous marketing strategy was to get as many links as you can, then you have surely messed it up big time.

In such a case, your best strategy is to disallow bad domains from your Google webmaster tools. Politely request to as many of these spammy sites as you can and get as many links removed as possible. Paying for link removal is not a bad idea either. Ultimately, it is all about the ROI and whatever you can do to remove the bad links away is justified as long as it is providing a good ROI.

3) Promotions:

Not all promotional strategies work. Some don’t work, some works partly and some even backfires.
The safest ways of promotions for a content management campaign are PPC, social media, newsletters, updates via blog, press release etc.

The not so safe, yet most effective if done properly is Guest Blogging.

Usually, the best way to do promotions is to not think in terms of backlinks or anchor texts. Let the links be naturally achieved. If the links are editorial, there will be minimum issues with anchor texts or dofollow.

If you have already gone wrong on the guest blogging stage then it is time to look for obvious anchor text optimization posts and get them nofollowed. With guest blogging, one needs to take care of a number of issues. It is preferable that the anchor text is not optimized; the backlinks are mentioned in the article body and not in the author bio. If possible, do not mark the post as guest post at all. If unsure, go for nofollow backlinks.

4) List building:

With content marketing, the number one benefit that comes out of it is a strong and responsive email list.

If your content is good, it is well promoted and people like it, they will sign up to your newsletter. A newsletter can be a very good way to keep your subscribers hooked in; you can send them regular updates and make sure they never leave you. All this seems great, but what if you have already messed up in this step.

There are two possible ways to go wrong in this step. The number one is that you don’t have a subscription option yet. The only way to fix this is to quickly signup to mailchimp or aweber or any other email system and get an account. Set up your newsletter as soon as you can. The other issue that might have happened to your newsletter is that it is boring and contains thin content and as a result, people are unsubscribing.

The best way to cure a poor newsletter is to make it interesting. There is a reason why people have signed up on your newsletter in the first place. It was your content and they have liked it. Just make sure to deliver the same quality of content in your newsletter and you will see a substantial growth in your newsletter audience.

While content marketing campaigns can go wrong pretty easily, the good thing is that it can be fixed too. Content marketing is an invaluable tool for the online marketers and even with all the risks involved, it is impossible to ignore this marketing strategy.
